The reduced fare program provides a reduced Centro fare to eligible customers.

Reduced Fares & Reduced Fare ID Cards



Seniors and persons with disabilities who use Centro’s bus service are encouraged to apply for a Reduced Fare Photo ID, which will save money when using the bus. Reduced Fare Photo ID’s are accepted on any regular Centro bus – any day of the week and any time of the day. The Reduced Fare Photo ID allows customers to ride the bus for half-fare.

Who is Eligible for Reduced Fare?


 
Seniors

Seniors age 65 or older who show the driver either a Centro ID or a combination of a Medicare card and photo ID upon boarding the bus. Seniors may also purchase a Permanent Centro Reduced Fare Photo ID.

Note: The eligibility age in Utica is 60 or older.

Persons with Disabilities

Persons with disabilities who show´╗┐ the driver either a Centro ID or a combination of a Medicare card and photo ID upon boarding the bus. Persons with disabilities may also purchase a Centro Reduced Fare Photo ID which is valid for 4 years (must recertify every 4 years). 

Medicare Card Holder

Medicare card holders who show the driver a combination of a Medicare card and photo ID upon boarding the bus.

Children Ages 6 to 9

Children ages 6 through 9 who are accompanied by an Adult.

How Do I Apply?


Reduced Fare Applications are available online and at all Centro office locations as follows:

Syracuse

If you are a senior citizen, you will need both a photo ID and an official document with your birthday on it. Centro accepts any government document displaying your birthday, including:
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Medicare card
  • Healthcare card
  • Social Security correspondence
If you are a person with a disability, you will need a photo ID and an official document verifying your disability. Centro accepts any documentation clearly indicating that you are receiving one or more of the following:
  • Social Security Disability Income (SSDI)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Department of Veterans Affairs Compensation or Pension
  • Vocational and Educational Services for People with Disabilities (VESID)
  • Medicaid Aid to the Disabled (NOTE: Medicaid card will NOT be accepted by itself)
OR
Documents must be on company letterhead, dated within the last six months, and should indicate that you are an active client of any one of the following:
  • Developmental Disabilities Services
  • Independent Living Services
  • Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD)
  • Arc (of Onondaga, of Oneida, etc.)
  • ARISE, Inc.
  • Aurora, Inc.
  • ENABLE, Inc.
  • Mental Health Association
  • Transitional Living Services, Inc.
  • United Cerebral Palsy and its affiliates
  • An accredited treatment or rehabilitation program
  • *Onondaga County Department of Social Services/JOBSplus!
OR
A document stating that you are legally blind, hearing impaired, or have a physical or mental disability such as a brief statement from and signed by a physician.

How Much Does a Reduced Fare Photo ID Cost?


A $2.00 processing fee is required for a new or renewed photo ID card. A replacement fee of $5.00 will be charged for a lost or stolen photo ID. Customers must visit the Centro office located nearest to them in order to have their picture taken and complete the application form. ID cards are produced while you wait. Please call ahead so that we are prepared to assist you.

Note: Beginning July 5, 2016 Syracuse-based Centro customers who are eligible for reduced fare may apply for a reduced fare photo ID at the Syracuse Transit Hub. Reduced Fare Applications will be available at the Customer Service window, and photo IDs will be taken Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM ONLY. A $2.00 processing fee will be required at the time your photo is taken (CASH ONLY) and photo ID cards will be produced while you wait.

How Do I Use My Reduced Fare ID?


Upon boarding a Centro bus, show the Driver your Reduced Fare Photo ID and be prepared to deposit half the regular fare into the fare box. For example, if the regular fare is $2.00, you will be required to pay $1.00.

Note: Please have exact fare, as Centro drivers cannot make change.

*Qualifying individuals must contact their Job Coach to determine eligibility and obtain the required documentation.
